Mission:
Sierra
Leone
In Sierra Leone, access to neurosurgical care is limited. As such, many Sierra Leoneans suffering from neurological conditions cannot currently obtain the treatment they desperately need. The lack of specialized medical facilities and trained neurosurgeons leaves countless individuals without hope for a better future. We aim to change this!
DR. PETER BANGURA
“500 people suffer from traumatic brain injury every year. All 500 died because Sierra Leone has no neurosurgeon.”
DR. ALLIEU KAMARA
“Neurological disorders account for 30% of global disease burden with majority from LMICs. To address this we need to organize the delivery of healthcare services and training according to specific country needs.”
neurosurgical burden
is the current patient to surgeon ratio at Connaught Hospital, the main public hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
400:1
neurosurgical training
2
fellows, Drs. Allieu Kamara and Peter Bangura have begun their neurosurgical residencies in Rabat, Morocco, with the goal of returning home and training future generations of Sierra Leonean surgeons.
FINANCIAL BURDEN
2,000
USD covers 1 month of training for the 2 residents in Rabat.
FUNDRAISING
67,000
Mission: Brain aims to USD $67,000 to support the Rabat trainees, and USD $215,000 to support the project overall.
